In line three, the poem says, "Her Early Leaf's A Flower," which defines youth as innocent, and beautiful like a flower. Line two, "Her Hardest Hue To Hold," represents that youth is very hard to keep because they get older in age. Line one, "Natures First Green Is Gold," indicates nature's first green is youth, because every living thing begins with youth. It also means that all good things are going to change eventually, like people, seasons, and nature. But, since good times will come again, a new beautiful baby will be born. Life begins through beautiful babies, but sadly in many years the baby will die. Even though the great times come to an end, they will be followed by more and more great times. Many times in a person's life there will be unhappiness and sorrow, the good times will end. Robert Frost is saying good things will not stay forever. Every living thing is beautiful, and every beautiful thing will eventually die.
That life may seem perfect when going right, but this will not stay forever. This poem has two meanings, the first about good things never lasting forever, and the second about youth and innocence. Later in the film, Ponyboy finds Johnny’s interpretation of the Frost poem: that beauty and innocence are transient and must be guarded like gold. “Stay gold” are Johnny’s last words before he dies. The Robert Frost poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” plays a vital role in the film, as Ponyboy (played by Howell) reads it to an injured Johnny (Macchio) while they are in hiding, but says he really doesn’t understand it. STAY GOLD MEANING MOVIE
The movie has become a cult favorite, partly because Hinton’s book has become required reading in many high schools and mostly due to the fact that every teenage actor in the cast went on to become a Hollywood A-list heartthrob. (Susan Eloise) Hinton who based the story on her own experiences in an Oklahoma high school, which was divided by rival gangs, the hardscrabble Greasers and the wealthier Socs (pronounced “soashes”). The Outsiders was adapted from a 1967 novel by teenage author S.E. “Stay Gold,” which runs during the opening credits of The Outsiders, starts with these memorable lyrics: “Seize upon that moment long ago / One breath away and there you will be / So young and carefree / Again you will see / That place in time… so gold.” In the song inspired by Robert Frost’s 1923 poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” Wonder sings about striving to hold onto the wondrous, pure, innocent and exciting “goldenness” of youth. Today, we have the legendary Stevie Wonder singing “Stay Gold,” a beautiful ballad he co-wrote for the 1983 cult movie classic, The Outsiders.
